Managing compliance with resource consent conditions can be complex. One of the most difficult areas to manage can be in dealing with sub contractors, because even though contractual obligations can be passed to third parties, the responsibility for consent compliance remains with the consent holder.

All environmental managers should be aware of the importance of explaining fully the conditions associated with each new project involving “subbies”.

News- Serious toxic waste dumping charges proven by Environment Waikato

A Waikato company which unlawfully buried illegal toxic chemicals in a way that risks them getting into waterways has been found guilty of charges laid by Environment Waikato under the Resource Management Act.

In one of the most significant cases of its type in New Zealand, Waitoa-based Wallace Corporation Ltd and two of its senior employees were found guilty of discharging polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by burying them under a new building being constructed at the company’s property. The reserved decision of Environment Judge Fred McElrea was released late last week after hearings in Morrinsville and Auckland earlier this year. The charges against Wallace Corporation, rendering plant manager Neville Cross and electrical manager Barry Dew were laid under section 15(1)(d) of the RMA.

Industry Movements – Andrew Stewart Ltd

International environmental scientist Dr Stephen Stokes has joined consulting firm Andrew Stewart Ltd (ASL) as a director. Stokes is a former associate professor at Oxford University’s Centre for the Environment, and has served on a number of national and international scientific advisory boards. Since returning to New Zealand he was previously Resources and Environmental Manager for Perry Aggregates Ltd in Hamilton.
