NZ Impact of Nitrate in Balfour Groundwater under Review

Farmers in the Balfour area will be invited to help Environment Southland study the impact of nutrient leaching on nitrate levels in local groundwater.
Environment Southland has been monitoring groundwater in the Balfour area since 2001 in response to community concerns about whether land use changes and an increase in dairy farming would have an impact on domestic water supplies. (Read on …)

Fish Survey turns up significant rubbish dumping issue

Environment Bay of Plenty is carrying out a survey of East Cape State Highway culverts to identify those that prevent the movement of fish between the streams and the ocean.

The aim of the survey is to identify culverts that could be improved to help fish migrating from the ocean to return upstream habitat and vice-versa.

By the Numbers -Farm That Employed Dairy Manager of the Year Convicted with Record Environmental Fine

A record fine has been handed down by the Environment Court in Napier today to the Crafar Group dairy operation, Taharua Farm, for breaching its resource consent.

Taharua Farm has been fined $37,500 after Hawke’s Bay Regional Council laid charges for the discharge of dairy effluent that was well over the resource consent conditions.
