NZ Problem Dairy Consents to be Reviewed

Three companies who have recently been convicted of discharging dairy effluent to waterways are likely to have their discharge consents reviewed by Environment Southland.
Councillors agreed today to serve notice on Union Station Dairies Ltd, Antara Dairy Ltd and White Water Ltd next May that it intends to review the conditions of their resource consents. The timeframe is dictated by the consents themselves – in each case, a notice of review can only be served between May and July.
In the meantime, Council staff will negotiate with each consent holder over how the reviews are to be carried out.
Compliance Manager Mark Hunter reported to the Council that his staff were concerned about the provisions for effluent storage, application rates and contingency plans on the properties.
