AU Farm waste disposal after bushfires
Landowners and authorities may be required to dispose of stock that has perished in the recent bushfires. The proper disposal of dead stock is an important health and environmental consideration.
EPA encourages the removal of dead stock to rendering facilities or landfills in the first instance, however EPA understands that this is not always an option. EPA has assisted a number of councils to establish mass stock burial sites and these should be used wherever possible. Please consult with your local council
if required
In areas where stock cannot be moved to a landfill or an approved burial site, they should be disposed of by burial in accordance with EPA guidelines.
Burning of dead stock must be avoided unless mandated by the Department of Primary Industries.
Please see EPA’s publication “Waste Management on Farms”. Livestock owners and authorities can also contact their local Animal Health Officer with the Department of Primary Industries.
