AU By the Numbers – Transpacific ordered to pay $75,000
Transpacific Cleanaway Pty Ltd were found guilty, in December 2008, of breaching its EPA operating licence for its Tullamarine Landfill operation and been ordered to pay $75,000 to a community environmental project.
The court heard that Transpacific’s licence allowed for the disposal of prescribed industrial waste at certain locations on site; as well as the stockpiling of clean fill. However, during an EPA licence compliance inspection, four stockpiles were suspected of containing substances other than clean fill.
In all 15,000 cubic metres of material in four of the stockpiles was found to contain prescribed industrial waste.
EPA required the company to deposit the stockpiles into the active tipping area of the landfill.
The $75,000 will fund Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West Billi Tea Tales project, a waterwatch program educating school and community groups on local waterways.
