NZ By the Numbers – GW Calls for Air Discharge Monitoring Results Following Explosion at Plant
Greater Wellington has asked Exide Technologies Ltd to provide lead to air discharge monitoring results from its Petone battery recycling plant after an explosion there last Friday.
The incident occurred just after midday as a result of a steam explosion in the furnace room which broke windows on the Exide building’s southern boundary. Exide is also investigating the incident.
“As it was a steam explosion, any lead discharge is likely to have been minimal and we have a low level of concern about health effects. However, we have asked for their most recent monitoring results as a precautionary measure,” Greater Wellington Environmental Regulation manager Alistair Cross said.
