NZ By the Numbers – Stream works prosecution underway

Greater Wellington is prosecuting south Wairarapa landowner Lloyd Rayner and Hauroa Farms Ltd for works in a wetland bordering Lake Wairarapa.

The Council is laying three charges – excavating/disturbing a riverbed, damming water and diverting water from a river and wetland.

The works were undertaken in the Tauherenikau Delta, a wetland area with a high degree of natural character and identified as of national significance because it is one of the largest remaining wetlands in the Wellington region.

Areas designated with a high degree of natural character, including significant ecological values, have additional protection because a resource consent is required. In many cases works are not permitted.

The area where the works occurred is part-owned by Hauroa Farms Ltd and in part by Fish & Game New Zealand.

Greater Wellington Environmental Regulation Manager Al Cross said the works had a number of negative effects by substantially reducing the size and resilience of an important and unique wetland and its ability to sustain aquatic life.

“These areas are home to a unique variety of wetland plants, water fowl and freshwater fish that are important for the biodiversity of the region.”

Mr Cross urged landowners and contractors considering works in water courses and wetlands to contact Greater Wellington consents and compliance staff for advice on whether works are permitted or if resource consents are required.

He said all stream works should be carried out in a way that avoids, or alleviates any adverse effects on vegetation and stream life.
