$65,000 Fine Appropriate Says EW

Environment Waikato says the $65,000 fine imposed today on the Crafar company Hillside Ltd is appropriate for the offending involved.

The company was fined today in the Hamilton District Court on four charges involving three of improper disposal of effluent and one charge of breaching an abatement notice directing the company to cease the unlawful discharges at its property at Kuratau, near Turangi.

Farmer Fined $23,000 For Polluting River

Wellington, Jan 26 NZPA – An elderly Golden Bay farmer has been fined $23,000 for discharging effluent into the Onahau River.

In the Environment Court in Nelson yesterday Judge Brian Dwyer said 74-year-old Patricia Nancy Riley had a history of “extremely poor compliance”. Riley faced two charges of breaching the Resource Management Act. (Read on …)

Two Queensland Mines Face Potentially Huge Fines If Convicted

Two mining companies in northwest Queensland face charges over their alleged mismanagement of contaminated wastewater.
MMG Century Limited, which operates the world’s second largest zinc mine northwest of Mount Isa, has been charged with causing serious environmental harm by discharging contaminated wastewater into waterways during the heavy wet season in 2009, the Queensland government said in a statement.
Birla Mt Gordon’s charges relate to continuing to store excessive amounts of contaminated water on the site of its copper mine. (Read on …)
